René Primevère Lesson (20 March 1794 – 28 April 1849) was a French surgeon, naturalist, ornithologist, and herpetologist. He served on Duperrey's round-the-world voyage of La Coquille (1822–25), on which he collected natural history specimens. He was the first naturalist to see Birds of Paradise in the wild. On returning to Paris, he spent seven years preparing the section on vertebrates for the official account of the expedition: 'Voyage autour du monde entrepris par ordre du Gouvernement sur la corvette La Coquille'."
