Born in Brooklyn as John Joseph Patrick Ryan, the son of a steamship line executive, Jack Lord spent his teen years working as a seaman. Off-duty, Jack sketched and painted. He attended New York University on a football scholarship (he was a first-team lineman) and majored in art. Upon graduation, he opened an art school and was recognized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art where several of his works are still exhibited. His works are also exhibited in the British Art Museum and other prominent collections.
